the BASEMENT

At that period of time, I felt as if there was something frustrated inside me, both monstrous and vulnerable at the same time. It led me to think about the Greek myth of the Minotaur: a beast that was trapped inside the maze, who simultaneously trapped others in its hunt. I also thought of all the heroes and characters from the perspective of the Minotaur and the walls of the labyrinth, having the experience of both inside and outside at once.
My poem explores the frustration of this in-between, in an attempt to feel some sort of empathy for this imagined creature inside me. What would it be like to watch it, feed it, see the same beast in other people? What would it be like for something to eat away at you, and also be nurtured by you?
By giving a life to these conflicting experiences inside, I was able to see my own half-bull for what it was, and was finally able to let it go.
