3 masks is a piece that I want to explore my own identity as an intentional student form Hong Kong. I think mask is something that could easily represent one's identity, however, it's also something that you could easily take down and change to another identity. When I am making this three masks, I use my face to shape the masks. As I am pushing this mask on my face super hard. The uncomfortable feeling and pain form the wires stabbing me make me realize this the represents how immigrant and intentional student experience. This action of creating a mask is just like moving to a brand new new environment, its uncomfortable and sometimes hard to get used to it. And this phase of creating a new self or identity is just like making a mask out of yourself. 3 masks all represent my identity and my struggles of self belongings. The melting flags on all three masks represent the process of developing a new identity however it's also something that slowly fading away.
I think this work represents the struggle that lots of intentional student or immigrant have. I also think it's a symbol of don't let your nationality or government represent you. Don't let the government tell you who you should be. Take off the mask that they are trying to put on you. @lololeung_hk
