As a student, I spend most of my time staring at hallways. Buildings and libraries seem like a labyrinth when the same sets of walls repeat endlessly, taunting the common person without escape. This is one of the common themes of the Backrooms, a 3D-animated series created by Kane Parsons in 2022. The story goes that anyone can slip into an infinite realm of familiar, yet uninhabited, places–and be trapped forever. These places are of transitory periods: hallways taking us from place to place, segment to segment of our day planned to the second…repeating day by day until we graduate. The lack of people where they should be creates a feeling of uncertainty.

I’ve never once related to all that. When I look at the world around me, I feel exactly what you see today. I feel a sense of wonder, no matter how many times I’ve seen these sights before. I cannot help but be impressed. I am not religious, but I believe this is what religion comes from: the radiant energy that comes from the awe of structure and society. In that sense, even something as mundane as a hallway can feel passionate

But by putting these familiar sights under the framing of the Backrooms and adding life to them through a rainbow of color, I hope to ignite the same feeling of wonder and energy in you.

Look past the mundane and see the beyond.
