She’s A Really Nice Girl

Zoe Nelles

Acrylic and collage on wood, 20” x 24”

 2025

I am interested in issues of memory, place, and ephemerality. My work is largely autobiographical, and I transcribe the world around me into images that can be rearranged or redacted. I work to build pieces that contribute to an elliptical narrative that activates a sense of surprise between the image, material, and viewer. The resulting works are evident of an attuned sensitivity to environment and experience.

My practice relies on interaction with found and sought out objects and materials. They provide a structure for compositions to evolve and rearrange in relation to paint and collage. These elements are the aesthetic and conceptual groundwork for my paintings. Pieces are fleshed out through collage and material push and pull. I use acrylic mediums, found objects, and oil paint to build images that wrestle with the tension between precision and intuition. By remixing previously discarded objects and delicately composed compositions, the work finds confidence in mystery and hesitation
