In this self-portrait, I reflect on my first experiences climbing big glaciers after having surgery, which brought several layers of exposure for me. There’s the sun beaming down, the blinding brightness of the snow, and the crevasses lurking below, ready to catch you in a careless moment. I prepared sun protection, but I was less prepared for the range of buried emotions I experienced. Up in these remote and dangerous places, pushing my body to its limits, I faced feelings I'd been running from for a long time. Thoughts appeared like, "I'm scared I'll never walk again." Yet there I was, climbing a ladder on the side of a mountain, tethered to my friends by a rope. Surreal.
Gas Works Park
Members from our drawing class took a trip to Gas Works Park for a plein air assignment. It was a fun experience to work on our landscapes together on the hill. This piece not only captures that memory but also influenced the style of my self-portrait, 'Exposure.'
