Like past artists that deal with fundamentality, Carl Andre, Sol De Witt, Josef Albers, Ann Truitt, I am also trying to think of how I can reclaim the physical properties and nature of objects within my work. Art movements that investigate this term are talented in stripping away recognizable visual language that we are used to to break through our perceptive experience of the world. However, I am more interested in referencing or suggesting recognizable images to explore the ways that images have altered our fundamental being.
The unfortunate caveat of simplicity in today's world is that it is a statement of abolishment when it is not paired with visual stimulation. When a work does not reference the culture and politics of objects and images it naturally seems resistant to it - or oblivious. Works that rest and do not compete for attention are not resonating with our contemporary biologies and struggle to make a lasting impact. I want to use my work as a way of understanding how contemporary people perceive the world and what that means for the fundamentality of nature and society.
