Anatomical Studies of the
Transgender Male Body

paper presented in a binder [multimedia]2023
Anatomical Studies is a very personal work of mine that explores how my body and my life would be looked at if it was stripped down to only the biological components. The idea for this work was inspired by the sorts of comments that many transgender people get throughout their life and the words that have haunted me throughout my transition:
“Your bones will always biologically be ____”
“When you die, what will scientists say about your body?”
“You can’t change your biology”
These words have changed both who I am as a person, and forced me to question the way in which I exist in the world. So to navigate these feelings and emotions, I took a very literal approach of looking at the biological pieces of my own body. I took each part - my head, my arms, my legs, etc. - and collaged together a binder of scientific notes, measurements, and images that encapsulated what would be taken away from my existence. Essentially, I acted as though I was a scientist trying to understand their subject.
When looking through this work, I want to know whether or not people feel that they now know who I am, or if I still feel like a stranger. Selfishly, I also want them to ask themselves how their own life/body would be presented in a work like this.
