Growing up, the concept of neglect was pivotal in shaping who I am today. Through this artwork, I endeavor to articulate the emotions associated with feeling
abandoned, using vibrant colors for intensity. The intentional use of stark contrasts aims
to evoke a sense of holding space, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the
emotional narrative.
During the conceptualization phase, I drew inspiration from stock photos while
simultaneously envisioning the composition and desired values. Utilizing Procreate, I
crafted a mockup that integrated references, blending elements to achieve the
envisioned outcome. Although my intention was to include personal photos, the scarcity
of images from my childhood led me to use alternative references.
A crucial aspect of this piece is the presence of a teddy bear held by the little girl.
In the absence of proper parental affection, children often seek comfort in inanimate
objects, forming emotional attachments as a coping mechanism. The inclusion of the
teddy bear serves as a poignant symbol of this adaptive response, highlighting the
resilience of the young, who, despite being out of control in their circumstances, find
ways to connect with the world around them.
This artwork also seeks to provide a visceral experience, inviting viewers to
reflect on the profound impact of neglect on a child's emotional landscape. Through
meticulous composition, symbolism, and personal reflection, I aim to convey the
complexities of growing up in an environment influenced greatly by abandonment and
simultaneously observing the resilient spirit that emerges in the face of adversity.
