Kalaloch in Movement

Kort Maeda (she/her)

 Digital Media2023

My work explores the relationship between land, ecologies, and different ways of knowing. How do our ways of knowing influence our relations with the natural world? What does it look like to have relationships with land and ecology? Similarly, can we ground these relationships in curiosity, reciprocity, and renewed wonder? The Kalaloch Tree of Life located on the Olympic Peninsula is a reminder of the convergence of different ways of knowing: scientific reasoning, traditional ecological knowledge, and direct observation. A spruce tree suspended in the air, balancing between two cliffs on the coast. The spruce and root cave remains exposed to a blend of elements, creating spaces of uncertainty and unanswered questions that challenge notions of western scientific thought.
